Calculating Suzie is a superhero whose superpower is Mathematics. She does division by zero in her sleep, she trisects angles with her eyes closed and manages to turn negative numbers into something positive.

I have been documenting her activities since 2018. These documentations take the form of drawings, paintings, photographs, and video recordings.

The photos come from various larger expeditions:
– Calculating Suzie in the Footsteps of Archimedes (Sicily, 2019)
– Calculating Suzie in Quarantine (Poland, 2021)
– Calculating Suzie in the Land of Fractals (Iceland, 2023)

Sometimes her perfomences are recorded in video format.

Calculating Suzie was created in 2018. Initially, her accomplishments were immortalized in the form of collages and illustrations on paper. They depicted feats unimaginable to ordinary people: exiting a black hole, juggling the numbers 6 and 9, or a record of her playing four-dimensional beach volleyball.

The idea for the character emerged when I was Browse 1960s fashion magazines. The models in the photos had an inscrutable expression; it was impossible to tell what they were thinking. I thought no one would ever expect them to be contemplating truly grand mathematical problems during a photoshoot. This is how one character came into being, a mix of many beautiful models: my alter ego, Calculating Suzie, whose superpower is mathematics.
